Beck's
Hybrids of Atlanta, Indiana sets June 3, 2003, as the official
groundbreaking ceremony for the new greenhouse facility at their
home office. Sonny Beck, President of Beck’s Hybrids says,
"After more than a year of planning, we are thrilled to announce
the ground breaking for our new greenhouse and laboratory
facilities. This state of the art facility will be second to
none in our marketing area and will continue to provide Beck’s
and Beck’s customers the advantage of having new technology
products first in Beck’s genetics, which they know and trust."
Beck’s selected Rough Brothers as the greenhouse supplier for
the project. They are based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The lab head
house supplier is Behlen Manufacturing out of Nebraska.
Two new greenhouses will provide over 8,000 square feet total
and will allow hybrids to be bred year round. The facility will
include supplemental lighting and is due to be completed by
September of this year. The lab head house is a two-story
building with over 13,000 square feet for offices and
laboratories to enhance quality assurance procedures.
Dr. Kevin Cavanaugh, Research Director of Beck’s Hybrids,
says: "Beck’s new greenhouse facility will greatly enhance our
efforts to incorporate traits into our corn inbreds. This means
that the farmer can expect corn hybrids with traits bred in them
in less time than ever before. The facility will lessen our
dependence on off-season nurseries in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and
South America. As we view the future in corn breeding, the
greenhouses will be vital to maintain our competitive advantage
in the corn industry."
Other projects Beck’s Hybrids will be endeavoring to complete
before harvest season include a new bulk storage facility,
sheller building and cob building.
