New Storcide® II effective against lesser grain borer, other pests
Dallas, Texas
November 10, 2004

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has granted the much-anticipated label for Storcide® II insecticide, giving growers a powerful new weapon for combating stored grain pests.

Storcide II protects against a broad spectrum of insect pests, including the lesser grain borer. In addition, the active ingredients in Storcide II have CODEX MRL (maximum residue limits) tolerances, so labeled crops protected with Storcide II may be shipped to international markets. Storcide II is a liquid grain protectant containing two proven active ingredients, chlorpyrifos-methyl (the active ingredient in Reldan? stored grain insecticide) and deltamethrin. Deltamethrin is a highly active compound effective at very low use rates. Storcide II will be offered as an all-in-one formulation designed for direct application to stored crops and seed. Storcide II is also approved for use as a bin protectant.

The new product protects against a wide range of stored grain insects, including lesser grain borer, weevils, beetles and moths. Labeled crops include wheat, barley, oats, sorghum and rice.

“This is an exciting development for grain growers and for Gustafson,” says Glen Karaffa, stored grain products manager for Gustafson. “The combination of Reldan and deltamethrin provides growers with superior protection against lesser grain borer and other target pests.

The lesser grain borer has become a major problem in parts of the country, and growers will be pleased with the protection Storcide II provides against this costly pest. “Storcide II is highly effective against pests at extremely low use rates,” Karaffa adds. “Storcide II can play an integral role in an effective integrated pest management program.” Karaffa notes that Storcide II should only be applied to insect-free grain. Any infested grain should be fumigated to kill existing insect populations.

Storcide II will replace both Storcide (chlorpyrifos-methyl and cyfluthrin) and Reldan in the Gustafson LLC product line.

Gustafson is the grain protectant industry’s research, development and technical authority. The company also is North America’s leading supplier of proprietary chemistry, biological agents and sophisticated application equipment for seed treatment and seedling protection. The Gustafson product line includes fungicides, insecticides, biological products, stored grain and seed protectants, seed coatings, seed treatment equipment, treatment applicators and automatic sampling equipment.
