RTA, a leading seed treatment that already provides growers with
broad-spectrum seed and soil-borne disease protection in wheat
and barley, just got better with the addition of three new
diseases to the label.
The new diseases apply to spring wheat, winter wheat and barley.
They include:
- Control of seed rot caused by Pythium
- Control of seed rot caused by Fusarium
- Control of damping-off caused by seed- and soil-borne
Fusarium.
“The addition of these diseases to the Dividend label is
excellent news for cereal growers,” says Rick Istead, crop
manager, seed treatments with
Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, Inc., the company that
makes Dividend XL RTA. “Seed rot and damping-off can be caused
by a number of different pathogens, and these additions to the
label just strengthen Dividend’s position as the grower’s best
defence against seed and soil-borne diseases in wheat and
barley”.
“The need to protect cereals from seed and soil-borne diseases
is clear,” says Istead. “Pathogens like Fusarium and
Pythium are usually present in the soil and can cause a host
of disease problems; plus, seed quality is expected to be
generally lower going into the 2005 season, so the risk of
seed-borne disease is higher.”
Istead urges growers to have their seed tested for the presence
of seed-borne pathogens at an accredited lab. “For instance, a
Fungal Screen™ test from 20/20 Seed Labs will show growers
exactly what is on their seed, and then they can choose the seed
treatment that’s best for them.”
Syngenta is a
world-leading agribusiness committed to sustainable agriculture
through innovative research and technology. The company is a
leader in crop protection, and ranks third in the high-value
commercial seeds market. Sales in 2004 were approximately $7.3
billion. Syngenta employs some 19,000 people in over 90
countries. Syngenta is listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SYNN)
and in New York (SYT).
