The Prime Minister has approved a
programme to develop and apply bio-technology in agriculture and
rural development till 2020 with an investment of 1 trillion VND
(62.9 million USD) for the 2006-2015 period, the Sai Gon Giai
Phong (Sai Gon Liberation) daily reported on Jan. 15.
The investment will be used for
research activities, trial production runs of major products,
and human resource training.
The programme plans to train
60-80 doctors, 200-250 master-degree holders and 500-1,000
technicians in bio-technology for agriculture in the 2006-2010
period.
It also aims to have 70 percent
of land under cultivation used for new varieties of
bio-technological plants, with 30-50 percent of the acreage
reserved for genetically modified plants by 2020. |
