Roundup Ready alfalfa is likely to
expand weed-control options for alfalfa growers and potentially
enhance yield, forage quality and profitability, according to
researchers in the College of Agriculture at the
University of Wyoming.
A new bulletin, Roundup Ready Alfalfa: A new technology for high
plains hay producers, B-1173, describes research at Torrington
and at Scottsbluff, Neb.
Economic benefits will likely be determined by the price of the
new technology, the researchers say.
"Roundup Ready alfalfa is being extensively evaluated by public
and private researchers to develop management protocols and
address environmental concerns," says Stephen D. Miller,
director of the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station and a
researcher on the project. "This technology provides an
additional management tool for growers with the principle
features being its ease of use, flexibility and broad spectrum
weed control."
Potential shifts in the weed spectrum to more tolerant species,
weed resistance, and gene flow to feral alfalfa during seed
production are the major concerns with the new technology,
researchers say.
