National Agricultural Library (NAL)
has published 2008 editions of its NAL Agricultural Thesaurus (NALT)
and Glossary of Agricultural Terms in both Spanish and English.
The update is published collaboratively with the Inter-American
Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
NAL, the world's foremost
research library focused on agriculture, is part of the
Agricultural Research Service (ARS),
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's chief scientific research agency.
The 2008 edition of the
Agricultural Thesaurus and Glossary adds about 70 new
definitions in Spanish and English, with expanded terminology
associated with fuels, chocolate manufacture, bodies of water,
the U.S. National Forest System, and acronyms used in the
taxonomic classification of viruses.
The Thesaurus and Glossary Web
site features a new format presenting parallel English and
Spanish language interfaces, enabling users to search and read
all background materials in either language.
It also features a "Download
Files" page enabling users to download the thesaurus and
glossary files in an array of formats. A "Contact us" page is
also included where users can propose terms to be added to the
thesaurus and glossary.
The NALT is a key component for
organizing and describing agricultural information, and the
indexing vocabulary for NAL's AGRICOLA bibliographic database of
citations to agricultural resources. It is used throughout NAL,
by the Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC),
and within Web sites and databases of other USDA science
agencies.
The NAL published Spanish
language versions of the NALT (Tesauro Agrícola) and Glossary
(Glosario) in May 2007, supporting increased Spanish-language
access to agricultural information throughout the United States
and the world. Publishing the NALT in both languages makes it a
valuable bilingual reference tool. Organizations using the NALT
terms can easily add a Spanish language capability to their
agricultural information applications.
NAL staff originally prepared
the NALT to meet the needs of ARS scientists, publishing the
First Edition on January 1, 2002. The thesaurus is updated each
year.
IICA is a specialized agency of
the Inter-American System, established to encourage and support
efforts of member states to achieve agricultural development and
well-being for rural populations.

colaboración con el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para

NAL es la biblioteca agrícola
principal del mundo. Es parte del Servicio de Investigación
Agrícola (ARS), la agencia
principal de investigaciones científicas del Departamento de
Agricultura de EE.UU. (USDA
por sus siglas en inglés).
La edición 2008 del Tesauro
Agrícola y Glosario añade aproximadamente 70 nuevas definiciones
en español e inglés, con terminología expandida relacionada con
combustibles, el procesamiento de chocolate, cuerpos de agua, el
Sistema de Bosques Nacionales de EE.UU., y siglas usadas en la
clasificación taxonómica de virus.
El sitio Web
del Tesauro y Glosario ofrece un nuevo formato que presenta
interfaces paralelas en inglés y español y permite que los
usuarios puedan buscar y leer todos los materiales en cualquiera
de los dos idiomas.
También ofrece una página de
"Descargar archivos" que permite que los usuarios puedan
descargar el Tesauro y el Glosario en una variedad de formatos.
Una página para "Contactarnos" provee a los usuarios la
oportunidad para proponer términos para posible inclusión en el
Tesauro y Glosario.
El NALT es un componente clave
para la organización y descripción de información en agricultura
y el vocabulario de indexación para la base de datos
bibliográfica de citaciones de recursos en agricultura conocida
como AGRICOLA y mantenida por el NAL. Es usado por todo el NAL,
por el Centro de la Red de Información Agrícola (AgNIC),
y dentro de sitios Web y bases de datos de otros agencias de
ciencia del USDA.
El NAL publicó versiones en
español del NALT y Glosario en mayo del 2007, respaldando un
mayor acceso a información en agricultura en el idioma español
en EE.UU y el mundo. La publicación del NALT en ambos idiomas
hace de éste una valiosa herramienta de referencia bilingüe.
Organizaciones usando los términos del NALT pueden fácilmente
añadir capacidad en el idioma español a sus aplicaciones de
información agrícola.
El personal del NAL
originariamente preparó el NALT para satisfacer las necesidades
de los científicos del ARS, publicando la primera edición al
principio de enero del 2002. El tesauro es actualizado cada año.
IICA es una agencia
especializada del sistema interamericano, establecida para
promover y apoyar los intentos de los estados-miembros para
lograr el desarrollo agrícola y el bienestar de poblaciones
