USDA/PVPO grants protection to 14 new plant varieties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection to developers of 14 new varieties of seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants. They include barley, bean, clover, pea and wheat.

The certificates are being issued under the Plant Variety Protection Act. The certificates require that the varieties be new, distinct, uniform and stable. The owners will have the exclusive right to reproduce, sell, import and export their products in the United States for the duration of protection.

The 14 certificates are:

  • the Stockford, Chico, and Cochise varieties of barley, developed by WestBred, LLC., Bozeman, Montana.;
  • the Bandit and Seabiskit varieties of field bean, developed by Archer-Daniels-Midland Company, Decatur, Illinois;
  • the DURANA and PATRIOT varieties of white clover, developed by University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. and Grasslanz Technology Limited, Athens, Georgia;
  • the Trophy variety of oat, developed by Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University and A&M College; and Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, Baton, Rouge, Louisiana;
  • the TAMO 606* variety of oat, developed by Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, College Station, Texas;
  • the Hacienda variety of pea, developed by Seminis Vegetable Seeds, Inc., Oxnard, California;
  • the Expresso variety of common wheat, developed by WestBred, LLC, Bozeman, Montana;
  • the Duster* and Centerfield* varieties of common wheat, developed by Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES), Stillwater, Oklahoma; and
  • the LA482 variety of common wheat, developed by Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State University and A&M College, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

* In the United States, seed of this variety shall be sold by variety name only as a class of certified seed, and shall conform to the number of generations specified by the owner of the rights (84 STAT. 1542, as amended, 7 U.S.C. 2321 ET SEQ).

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service administers the Plant Variety Protection Act, which provides time- limited marketing protection to developers of new and distinct seed-reproduced and tuber-propagated plants ranging from farm crops to flowers.
