Pioneer's planting rate
calculator, a tool used by Pioneer sales professionals, offers
growers the ability to further customize planting and seed
options to meet the needs of their individual farming
operations. Experts at Pioneer
Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, say the planting rate calculator
factors in grain and seed prices and yield environment to
determine seeding rate for maximum economic yield.
"The planting rate calculator is a tool that allows growers to
examine all aspects of their input costs," says Steve
Paszkiewicz, Pioneer senior research scientist. "With this type
of tool, growers can factor in their potential return based on
seed costs relative to yield potential. This number gives
growers a more complete cost analysis - information that becomes
even more crucial during times of uncertain grain markets."
Pioneer studies to determine economic seeding rate and plant
populations for each Pioneer® brand hybrid have been ongoing for
more than 20 years. The primary goal of these studies is to
determine the optimum plant population of each hybrid to
maximize harvestable grain yield.
"This extensive data set was used in creating the planting rate
calculator," says Jeremy Groeteke, Pioneer agronomy research
manager. "Within the tool there are multiple facets a grower can
enter - including yield environment, seed cost and grain
marketing price."
Once the information is entered, a Pioneer sales professional
can provide a customized analysis of the optimum planting rate
based on each hybrid and field entered.
"The calculator uses the data the grower enters - hybrid choice,
field agronomics, grain price and price of seed," says Groeteke.
"Then, with a click of a button, five seeding rates are listed
with corresponding net incomes per acre for each. The system
also provides a sixth option which is highlighted to show the
grower the recommended optimum choice for planting rate and
return. This allows the grower to view a complete list of
seeding rate options based on agronomic and economic factors
with anticipated returns for each.
"Each grower's situation is unique," Groeteke adds. "No two
comparisons of seeding rates are the same. Each grower has a
different marketing strategy for his or her grain, as well as
unique field situations and hybrid selections. This tool really
defines what is best for each individual's operation."
Growers looking for additional information on hybrid selection
