Beck’s Hybrids begins construction on foundation seed facility

.

Atlanta, Indiana
July 8, 2009

Beck’s Hybrids announced today that they have begun renovation and new construction on a Foundation Seed Facility located near Sharpsville, IN. The facility is located at the former Adler Seed plant along US 31 just south of Kokomo, IN.

Beck’s purchased the Adler Seed facilities earlier this year and has begun renovation in preparation for the new seed drying, cleaning and conditioning facilities that will allow Beck’s to handle small lots of foundation seed. The new construction includes additional drying facilities designed to dry ear corn for seed in 30 bushel bins for maintaining purity, plus a building for seed cleaning, sizing and treating, which will also include a color sorter to further enhance seed quality.

Dr. Kevin Cavanaugh, Director of Research at Beck’s says, “Having a facility dedicated to handling small lots of seed that is generated from our breeding and research efforts will enhance our ability to preserve purity in the seed lines that we increase for commercial use.” Sonny Beck, President of Beck’s Hybrids further adds, “Research has always been a focus, and this is the next step in the growth of our company to make seed products developed from our research efforts more commercially available for our customers.”

Beck’s Hybrids is a family-owned and operated seed company that serves farmers in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. According to a recent media survey, Beck’s ranks as the sixth largest seed company in the United States and the only one in the top six that is family-owned, making Beck’s the largest retail, family-owned seed company in the United States.
