Syngenta Crop Protection
Canada, Inc. is pleased to announce the arrival of Pulsar™
for use on all varieties of durum, spring wheat and barley.
Pulsar contains two Group 4 broadleaf herbicides; dicamba and
fluroxypyr.
Pulsar offers control of a variety of weeds, including kochia.
Pulsar provides dual-action management for the increasingly
problematic form of Group 2 resistant kochia, as well as
non-resistant kochia.
“Kochia is a serious problem for spring wheat, durum and barley
growers in the brown and dark brown soil zones,” says Jason
Pickering, Agronomic Brand Manager, Syngenta. “Kochia spreads
incredibly quickly and can have devastating impact if is not
controlled effectively. Group 2 resistant kochia is even more
challenging. That’s why we are pleased to offer this solution
for both resistant and non-resistant forms of the weed.”
Dr. Hugh Beckie, a research scientist with Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada in Saskatoon whose work includes tracking
herbicide resistance, has observed an increase in kochia
resistance across the Prairies, since the first case was
reported in the late 1980s.
“Resistance to Group 2 herbicides appears to be linked to a high
frequency of the resistance gene in the kochia population as
well as through pollen transfer,” Beckie explains. “Add to the
mix that kochia is a tumbleweed, and resistant seed can be
spread rapidly throughout fields and onto adjacent land.”
“We tend to find that if kochia is resistant to one Group 2
herbicide, it’s likely resistant to other Group 2 herbicides,”
says Beckie. “We advise growers who have documented or suspected
Group 2 resistance to tank-mix the Group 2 herbicide with a
different mode of action that controls kochia, or to switch to a
different mode of action such as a Group 4 herbicide.”
Pulsar provides an effective alternative against resistant and
non-resistant kochia. Pulsar is customizable with rate range and
an MCPA tank mix option, and is tank mixable with Horizon®. Main
pests controlled or suppressed with the addition of MCPA include
kochia, stinkweed, flixweed, lamb’s-quarters, shepherd’s purse,
volunteer canola, wild buckwheat, wild mustard, cleavers and
volunteer flax.
“We recommend that growers take a comprehensive approach to weed
management as part of what we at Syngenta call ‘The Great
Canadian Stand’,” says Jason. “Pulsar is one tool to help
growers achieve better yields while integrating smart,
sustainable practices, thus making the land better for today,
and tomorrow.”
