Emmerloord, The Netherlands and
Leeuwarden, The Netherlands
December 1998The seed potato companies Hettema, Emmeloord and the ZPC,
Leeuwarden are presently investigating the possibilities of a close co-operation. The
co-operation will have to lead to the foundation of a new company, in which the activities
of Hettema and the ZPC merge. The goal is to start by the middle of 1999.
Both Hettema and the ZPC expect on the long run advantages
out of this merger in the area of research and development of new varieties, marketing of
seed potatoes, and a further efficiency in their operations. The markets of both companies
are complementary. Hattema is enjoying a good market share in the countries around the
Mediterranean, whereas the ZPC is strong in Europe.
Merging a co-operative with a private company will require
the necessary adjustments in organization and juridical status. Hettema has issued share
certificates to her growers, breeders and employees. The ZPC is preparing a similar
system.
The results of the afore-mentioned feasibility study are
expected in the spring of 1999. After that, a final proposal will be presented by Hettema
to the holders of the share certificates and by the ZPC to the members of the
co-operative.
In the meantime affiliated growers and breeders of both
organisations have been informed by means of a personal letter as well as employees and
their employees' councils,
The now co-operation between Hettema and the ZPC would
result in a market share of approximately 40% of the total production and trade in Dutch
seed potatoes. The ZPC is also active in the trade of table potatoes. The number of
collaborators of Hettema amounts to 59 whereas in the trade organisation of the ZPC 86
people are employed.
