U.S. registration granted for Extreme(TM) and Backdraft(TM) herbicides
Parsippany, New Jersey
December 21, 1999

American Cyanamid Company has received U.S. registration for Extreme(TM) herbicide for use on Roundup Ready® soybeans and Backdraft(TM) herbicide for a burn-down application. Both products will be available for use during the 2000 growing season.

Extreme, a premix of Pursuit® herbicide, the leading residual soybean herbicide, and glyphosate,
the active ingredient in Roundup® herbicide, will be a superior in-crop alternative to Roundup alone in Roundup Ready soybeans. Backdraft will be the first and only soybean herbicide premix to combine the burn-down activity of glyphosate with residual control and will be targeted at no-till
acres in the southern Corn Belt and Mid-South.

"Extreme and Backdraft will redefine how growers manage Roundup Ready soybeans,'' says
George Fennell, business manager for corn and soybean products for Cyanamid's U.S. crop
protection products business. "We know that, because we asked growers how they would
improve Roundup. Eighty-five percent of them said, give it residual control. So we did.''

A superior alternative to Roundup herbicide-alone total post

Fennell attributes growers' interest in adding residual to glyphosate to their desire to make earlier
in-crop applications. Market research shows that most growers would apply a glyphosate product
with residual six days earlier (27 vs. 21 days) than a typical Roundup-alone treatment.

Fennell says many growers currently delay in-crop applications of Roundup in order to get by with
a single post application, though they may not be totally comfortable doing so.

"By combining glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, with the proven residual of Pursuit,
Extreme provides growers the best opportunity to make a single post application -- and they can
make it earlier,'' says Fennell. "Extreme will be a superior alternative to Roundup alone in most
Roundup Ready soybean situations.''

The industry's first burndown with residual In the no-till areas of the southern Corn Belt and Mid-South, Backdraft herbicide will be the burndown application in a sequential program with Roundup post-applied in Roundup Ready soybeans. With the residual activity of Backdraft in place at burn-down, growers can postpone their in-crop application of Roundup until just prior to canopy.

"Growers using Roundup alone in no-till are making up to three applications of Roundup in their
Roundup Ready soybeans -- burn-down, early- and late-post,'' says Fennell. "Backdraft may
eliminate a trip across the field.''

As with Extreme herbicide, Fennell points to research confirming grower interest in combining
burn-down with residual activity as the basis for launching Backdraft in 2000. "Sixty-six percent of
growers surveyed expressed interest in this product concept,'' says Fennell. "And we're more than willing to fill this unmet need in the marketplace.''
