Five scientists and the President
and CEO of AgraQuest
Inc. have been named recipients of one of two Industrial
Innovation Awards from the American Chemical Society's Western
Region for their innovation in the discovery and development of
Serenade(R) biological fungicide.
Sherry Heins, Denise C. Manker,
Ph.D., Jennifer Ryder Fox, Ph.D., Stephen Flanagan, Jimmy
Orjala, Ph.D., and CEO Pamela G. Marrone, Ph.D., of AgraQuest,
Inc., in Davis, Calif., will be honored today, October 29 by the
American Chemical Society at its western regional meeting in
Santa Barbara, Calif.
Marrone and her team discovered and developed an environmentally
friendly biological fungicide that fights a variety of fungal
and bacterial diseases, including gray mold, powdery mildew,
leaf and stem blights, and fire blight. Serenade, found in an
orchard in Fresno County, Calif. is as or more effective than
conventional pesticides, but safe to mammals, birds, fish, and
beneficial insects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has
approved the product for agricultural and home and garden use.
Serenade is also approved for use by organic growers.
"I am honored to accept this award for the entrepreneurial team
that commercialized this product in record time," said CEO Pam
Marrone. "Serenade is the first in a pipeline of innovative,
effective and environmentally friendly products for controlling
pests and plant diseases."
The American Chemical Society's Industrial Innovation Awards
recognize individuals and teams whose discoveries and inventions
contribute to the commercial success of their companies and
enhance our quality of life. The Dial Corporation will also be
recognized along with AgraQuest.
