Senior Breeder, Bulb Onions

Location: South Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

Permanent position

Context
Allium Seeds is the only UK specialist allium breeder, seed and set supplier. We breed bulb onion, shallot and echalion for the European market.
Reporting to the Managing Director, you will join a small existing team but liaising closely with our international partners the successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of this project – including the collaborative research aspects of the role.

Missions

We wish to appoint a senior breeder with an understanding of the principles of allium breeding. He/she will continue to manage and drive forward our exciting project to breed new bulb onion varieties for the European market.
The successful candidate will continue the rapid development of suitable genetics and increasingly utilise existing partner research capabilities.
He/she will work on established but developing programmes which are at various stages of market readiness.

This position has different aspects:

  • Develop intermediate and long day bulb onion varieties suitable for cultivation 35-49°N
  • Design and evaluation of breeding trials
  • Keep detailed records and communicate findings/results to colleagues
  • Selection of bulbs for and development of parent lines
  • Ensure availability of required quantities and quality of parent seed
  • Maintain parent lines
  • Maintain and develop understanding of new breeding techniques. Optimise the use and integration of new technologies with conventional breeding techniques
  • Communicate with laboratory personnel
  • Opportunity to influence future project direction

This position will involve regular travel within Europe.

Profile
The person we are looking for is Degree educated in science/plant breeding/genetics/horticulture or related field.
It is likely to be someone who has an existing involvement of five years with a breeding project for a competitive market. They will also have had involvement with or some detailed knowledge of modern allium breeding techniques.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and benefits will include a company vehicle.
