Greenhouse Manager

Location: Mills River, North Carolina, USA (Asheville, NC metro)

Full time.

The Opportunity:

As Ohalo’s Greenhouse Manager, the successful candidate will join a small and growing team of creative scientists that seek to transform plant breeding. This position will aid in development and management of a highly controlled multi-zoned glasshouse that grows row and horticultural crops to facilitate Ohalo’s research and scientific pursuits. Responsibilities include assisting recruitment and training of greenhouse staff, assignment of work schedules and staff management, enforcing adherence to safety regulation policies, procurement of fertilizer, pesticide, growing media, and other greenhouse supplies, and regulation of environmental control and irrigation systems. The greenhouse manager will integrate with the scientific teams on their projects to assure uninterrupted and efficient execution of breeding crosses and quality experimental data collection. The greenhouse manager will also assist staff with growing media preparation, planting, and application of pesticides and fertilizer on an as needed basis. The successful candidate will be safety-aware, efficient, organized, and responsible with previous greenhouse management experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Manage greenhouse staff and contractors
  • Regulate advanced environmental control and irrigation systems
  • Inspect facility’s equipment for signs of disrepair and perform routine maintenance
  • Coordinate greenhouse supply record keeping, inventory, and procurement
  • Obtain and/or maintain an NC pesticide applicator’s license
  • Supervise Integrated Pest Management
  • Prepare media for planting, plant or transplant seeds, cuttings, and other propagules
  • Interact with scientists to facilitate research and quality data collection and develop routine plant growth protocols
  • Follow company policies and practices with all internal and external interactions
  • Maintain security of company information including trade secrets

Candidate Profile:

  • Prior experience in a greenhouse environment (research greenhouse is a plus)
  • Familiarity with greenhouse lighting, irrigation, and environmental control systems
  • Experience identifying and treating pests and disease in plants
  • Experience with staff supervision and supply management
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse and creative teams
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Passport and ability to travel internationally
  • Ability to hold a North Carolina driver’s license and potential to be covered by a company vehicle insurance plan
