We are seeking a dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and experienced Remote Sensing Specialist to join the Wheat Physiology group at CIMMYT, working specifically with airborne remote sensing and high-throughput phenotyping in the Global Wheat Program.

The position will be based at CIMMYT’s headquarters in El Batan, Texcoco and will require approximately a three months per year stay at CIMMYT’s experimental station in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora during the field cycle.
Specific duties and responsibilities of this position include:
- Carry out and coordinate data collection in the field (airborne and ground-based remote sensing instruments).
- Develop automated process for analysis of aerial imagery (thermal, multispectral, hyperspectral) from raw image to experimental wheat plot extraction to spectral index derivation.
- Work with spectral indices (standard and new) as part of high-throughput phenotyping platform and selection tool for breeders.
- Derive 3D point clouds from aerial imagery.
- Support and co-coordinate the remote sensing activities within the Wheat group.
- Interpret and publish results.
- Liaise and collaborate with other groups within CIMMYT that are applying remote sensing techniques.
We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
Essential:
- PhD in remote sensing or related discipline.
- Background in physics, mathematics or statistics.
- Strong programming skills, specifically for image and spectral data processing.
- Track record of publications on remote sensing techniques.
- Fluency in English.
- Experience with high volume data collection in the field with remote sensing instruments.
- Team worker and enjoys collaborating with others.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of crop genetics and physiology.
- Experience in using UAVs in the field for data collection.
- Knowledge of Spanish.
The position is for a contract of two (2) years for a Post-Doctoral Fellow and three (3) years for an Associate Scientist, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.
