Junior Breeder, Tomato

Location: Myakka City, Florida, USA

POSITION IN THE ORGANIZATION: Reports to the Breeder, Tomato

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Working out and implementing plant breeding programs, as well as selection of plants, so as to obtain relevant information to allow selection of good varieties.

TARGET START DATE: March/April 2016

Summary of responsibilities:

  1. Working out and implementing plant breeding programs.
  2. Observing, assessing and selecting crops.
  3. Processing numerical data.

Brief description of responsibilities and duties:

  1. Working out and implementing plant breeding programs
    • Working out and implementing details / components of the program, such as:
      - Number of seeds to be sown, sowing, pollinating and harvesting times
      - Working and carrying out hybridization programs
      - Working out molecular marker tests and processing the results
    • Carries out work with regard to purification of parental lines as well as disease tests.
    • Coordinates and checks the execution of sowing, hybridization and pollination work as well as transplanting. For this purpose, consults with the Farm Manager or Group Leader in the greenhouse.
  2. Observing, assessing and selecting crops
    • Observing, assessing and selecting the developing crops, aimed at the breeding objective to be achieved.
  3. Recording of results
    • Recording, processing and analyzing all data in electronic systems.
    • Recording and processing results of disease tests.
    • Sorting, processing and calculating key statistics.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Job Profile:

Education / Knowledge

  • Master’s degree in Genetics / Plant Breeding with experience in vegetable crop breeding research.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Has knowledge in plant breeding and modern methods of breeding, is well acquainted with various cultivation techniques and has sufficient market knowledge.
  • Keeps this knowledge up to date.

Skills

  • Professional, assertive and clear communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Capable of handling numerical data. Bilingual in both English and Spanish preferred.

  • A detail oriented team player.
  • Shows personal initiative, is flexible and pragmatic, and able to portray and promote a positive image of the company’s vision, mission and values.

Independence

  • Performs the job/ duties independently as much as possible, under the responsibility of the Breeder.

Contacts

  • Maintains intensive internal and external contacts.

Leadership

  • Has no direct supervisory duties, but does give technical instructions and information to Crop Workers and Technicians.

Working Conditions

  • Works under stress and frequently with a computer screen. Is prepared to travel frequently.
  • Works in greenhouses or in open ground in varying climatic conditions.
