Euroseeds urges the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) to secure timely agreement of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) trilogue agreement Brussels, Belgium On 28 January, the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) is expected to vote on the final compromise text of the Regulation on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). This vote marks a decisive step towards making the agreed framework operational. Following the positive conclusion of trilogue negotiations in December 2025 and the endorsement by the Council, Euroseeds stresses the importance of preserving the balanced compromise reached. The text broadly reflects the European Commission’s original proposal, notably by distinguishing between different categories of NGT products. Euroseeds calls on ENVI Committee members to approve the text as agreed; any attempt to reopen the file or introduce new far-reaching amendments would risk delaying the implementation of the Regulation and undermining its objectives. Such delays would have concrete consequences for Europe’s agri-food sector: plant breeders and seed companies would lose competitiveness, farmers would face delayed access to innovative and climate-resilient varieties, and consumers would miss out on improved products for many years, with negative implications for Europe’s food security and resilience. Garlich von Essen, Secretary General and CEO of Euroseeds, commented:
Euroseeds remains committed to supporting EU institutions in the effective and timely implementation of the Regulation.
