High Density Mechanical Harvesting (HDMH) in practice at Fresh Produce of Ohio

November 27, 2020

Hydroponic lettuces that are grown in high densities and being mechanically harvested, create a whole new look on producing, processing and consuming these lovely leafy greens. Even though, the growing surface of this cultivation method is still limited globally, it is definitely an investment for the future.

After our first edition on High Density Mechanical Harvesting (HDMH) recently, where our sales colleague Jochim Reybrouck was taking you on a look into BASFs Experimental Greenhouse in ‘s-Gravenzande (NL) we now want to take you on a tour with Eric Highfield, Chief Agriculture Office at Free Leafy Greens (USA). Located in Ohio, the company is selling a variation of lettuce mixes, grown in a fully automated system without a human hand ever coming into contact with the product. “I believe that this type of system creates a whole new level of food safety for consumers”, Highfield says. The star of their varieties is the green leaf lettuce, Finstar, from BASF Vegetable Seeds.

Join Eric on his tour through the greenhouse and learn about High Density Mechanical Harvesting directly from a grower.
