Barley Australia - Malting barley evaluation update

Australia
March 4, 2022

The Board of Barley Australia has met to consider the recommendations from the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) for the various varieties currently under evaluation.  A summary of results is provided below:

Varieties Withdrawn from Evaluation

The following variety has been withdrawn by the relevant promoter and will no longer progress through the evaluation process:

AGTB0201

Varieties Undergoing Stage Two Evaluation

Buff (IGB1506):  Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2021 and will now continue Stage Two evaluation in 2022.

Laperouse (WI4952):  Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2021 and will now continue Stage Two evaluation in 2022.

Varieties Undergoing Stage One Evaluation

Commodus CL (IGB1908T):  Parcels of grain were pilot malted, as planned, to satisfy the requirements for Stage One.   Commodus CL has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2022.

Beast (AGTB0113):  Parcels of grain were pilot malted, as planned, to satisfy the requirements for Stage One.   Beast has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials.  Due to insufficient quantities of grain being available, evaluation will continue in 2023.

Cyclops (AGTB0200):  Parcels of grain were pilot malted, as planned, to satisfy the requirements for Stage One.   Cyclops has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials.  Due to insufficient quantities of grain being available, evaluation will continue in 2023.

IGB1825:  Parcels of grain were pilot malted, as planned, to satisfy the requirements for Stage One.   IGB1825 has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials.  Due to insufficient quantities of grain being accessible both this season and next, evaluation will continue in 2024.

Minotaur (AGTB0213):  Further evaluation in Stage One has been carried over into 2022, subject to final quality checks on targeted barley parcels.

AGTB0043:  Further evaluation in Stage One has been carried over into early 2022 from 2020.  Assessment was delayed due to the large number of entries progressing through Stage One in 2021 and the limitation on pilot malting batch slots available.

Varieties accepted into Accreditation Program

Barley Australia has accepted applications for three new varieties for malting barley evaluation. IGB20125T from InterGrain, and AGTB0244 and AGTB0318 from Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) have been accepted into Stage 0.  IGB20125T is another addition to the suite of imidazolinone barley varieties available to growers.  This variety is suited to higher rainfall environments and has an RGT Planet adaptation.  AGTB0244 and AGTB0318 are both suited to medium to high rainfall environments and has a non-glycosidic nitrile (GN) trait that may be of interest to the distilling sector.

Sufficient grain parcels of all three varieties are available for commencement of Stage One evaluation in 2022 (subject to final quality checks) and will be confirmed when final programming for the year is completed in the coming weeks.

Post Accreditation Support

Significant work has been underway over the last two years on the development of post accreditation support, which is aimed to assist newly accredited varieties with their entry into the marketplace.  A ‘Malt Performance Summary’ template has been developed, with the first release available now for Maximus CL.  Please follow the link below to view the Malt Performance Summary on the Barley Australia website.
