The following letter was received from Teresa Dahau de Rocha, President, Misiones Rurales Agentinas by John Batcha in 1994 when he was manager of the Partners of the Americas seed program.

Dear Mr. Batcha:

Someone said that better than to give fish is to teach to fish.

We firmly believe that the cure for poverty runs only through education. Thus our organization is dedicated to helping out the schools situated on the most depressed areas.

Your program reinforces precisely the concept mentioned at the beginning. By giving teachers seeds and planting instructions, you are not only providing them with much needed food, but also promoting the work ethics; having teachers and children work together for the common good, getting usable results. You, again, are "teaching them how to fish."

We wish the donors in your organization who make your program possible could see in person the results. Not only well-fed children, but also proud and happy to have obtained their vegetables mostly through their own effort. You are contributing to the development of their characters: to learn early in life that one’s own efforts pay out. This is the kind of help that our people need the most.

Once they learn this practical lesson, they will be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Sincerely,

Teresa Dahau de Rocha
President
