SEED PROGRAMS INTERNATIONAL (SPI) provides packets of seed and
seed know how to humanitarian organizations working to help families,
community groups and children in need throughout the world to grow some
of their own food . No bulk seed for commercial farmers is provided.
Many poor people, especially the very poor, do not have access to good
seed and many organizations working with them do not have the expertise
to operate seed programs. SPI works to help such organizations.
Following is information about SPI’s program:
· An assortment of
10-14 packets of seed is provided for a family from the following:

VEGETABLES - garden bean, beet, broccoli, Brussels
sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cantaloupe, carrot, Chinese cabbage,
cucumber, lettuce, mustard, okra, onion, peas, pepper, radish,
rutabaga, spinach, squash, tomato, watermelon.

FLOWERS - (when available, flower seed can be supplied
on special request).
· Seed packets are
currently available in the following languages - Albanian, Chinese,
English (on all packets), French, French Creole, Korean, Portuguese,
Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish and Kiswahili.
· Seed is
shipped in containers with a label on each box instructing how to store
and handle seed, as improper storage can damage or even kill seed. Seed
packets are shipped in (a) trays that are then placed in boxes, or, (b)
in plastic bags placed in boxes.
·
Phytosanitary Certificates are provided as needed and are obtainable.
· To help pay
part of program cost organizations ordering seed currently pay:

0 - 20,000 packets
= $.17 per packet

20,001 - 50,000
packets = $.16 per packet

50,001 - 100,000
packets = $.14 per packet

over 100,001
packets = $.12 per packet
COST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Payment of 1/2 is due with
the request and balance is due after packaging and before shipment is
made. Shipping cost from New York state is additional.
· Basic gardening
information is available to help train people how to grow better
gardens. Some information is available in English, French Creole,
, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.
· Organizations
receiving seed are to provide a written report for SPI about their
program nine months after seed is shipped to them. The purpose of the report
is to assist SPI in making changes needed to improve future programs.
