Scientist, Germplasm

Location: Alvin, Texas, USA

RiceTec, Inc. is a technology-based rice company focused on high-value products. With corporate headquarters in Alvin Texas, RiceTec combines unique skills in rice farming; modern, technology-based breeding techniques and diverse germplasm collection to efficiently develop and economically produce superior hybrid seed products as well as specialty rice for consumer markets.

SUMMARY

The Scientist is responsible for developing germplasm with improved agronomic traits by implementing plant breeding techniques, analyzing research data, and presenting results and recommendations to Management. The focus of this position is integrating germplasm research activities with line development to enhance and accelerate the development of successful rice hybrids. The Scientist plans, supervises and conducts field, greenhouse and laboratory operations as well as plans and executes breeding projects. The main area of research will include the development of low critical temperature lines with improved agronomic characteristics. The successful applicant should have a strong background in plant breeding and agronomy.

The position will be based at RiceTec Headquarters in Alvin, Texas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary responsibility will be to study the use of different technologies to develop temperature sensitive male sterility in rice, and become proficient in rice gemplasm development to ensure effective integration with the rest of plant breeding and hybrid research activities.
  • Participate in decision making regarding research priorities of research station and provides information on feasibility of prospective projects. Contribute to development of research objectives, research design, and data analysis.
  • Develop research plan, design experiments, outline research procedures to be followed, and identify and/or provide training to subordinate personnel to carry out research.
  • Plan schedule of research according to company’s timetable and establish daily or weekly routines necessary to meet project timetable. Assist with the coordination of field activities as necessary.
  • Work effectively in teams with other rice and company scientists and contribute to effective communication and synergy among the different Research and Technology Team members.
  • Provide expertise in field of research to other department members.
  • Prepare reports and papers of completed projects for presentation to management, or use in further research activities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate should have a M.S. or equivalent with 5 years work experience or a Ph.D or equivalent and 2 years work experience and significant contributions in a commercial hybrid breeding program with evidence of success, i.e., track record of developing commercially viable parent lines and hybrids. Experience is required in marker-assisted selection or demonstrated knowledge of marker applications to plant breeding, and breeding experience in Cytoplasmic Male Sterile and Transgenic crops.
