Monsanto has an opportunity available for a highly motivated Laboratory Operations Manager to join our lab in Waterman, Illinois.
Key Business Accountabilities:
Personnel
Manages laboratory employees with strong interpersonal and leadership skills. Provides an environment of teaching, training and developing employees to increase skill sets and facilitate professional growth. Other related responsibilities include:
- Performing employee appraisals. Recognizing employee disciplinary problems, conflicts and effectively communicating to management.
- Managing conflict and identifying problems to arrive at constructive solutions while maintaining positive working relationships. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with departmental guidelines, company policies and applicable laws.
Quality / Compliance
Assures consistency, reliability and credibility of laboratory data and cooperates with efforts for harmonization / standardization among global labs. Leads and provides an environment of optimizing and improving test methods and process control. Has knowledge of seed production and testing methods, ISTA and / or AOSA rules and Seed Regulatory.
Productivity
Assures established timelines are met. Evaluates work capacity and advises when temporary help is required.
Costs
Continuously looks for ways to optimize, increase efficiency and reduce costs. Able to assess capacity needs regarding people, equipment and laboratory footprint.
Safety
Leads and sees that all environmental, safety and health requirements are met. Meets all ESH training requirements and provides leadership and clear direction for employees. Creates a safe work environment that supports quality work and high productivity. Exercises maximum care and good judgment at all times to prevent accidents and injuries. Promotes awareness, training and enforcement of ESH procedures.
Communication
Communicates regularly and effectively with peers, subordinates and managers. Interpersonal skills are of key importance. Must be able to interact with others in a professional, calm, and tactful manner under a variety of situations and must retain confidentiality in personnel matters.
Core Business/Functional Skills and Education:
- Bs/MS/PhD degree in Agronomy, Engineering, Seed Physiology, Plant Physiology, Life Sciences or a related field.
- 3 or more years in laboratory management with experience in budgeting / finance / capacity utilization preferred.
- Adept in foresight & visionary thinking to anticipate needs and set strategic direction.
- Skilled in identifying & developing both leadership and technical talent.
- Strong desire to improve the status quo and implement change in a sustainable manner.
- Ability to build participative teams across diversely skilled members and cultures with both formal and informal authority.
- Skilled in communicating complex messages simply & succinctly to diverse audiences.
- Possess skills in quality control, quality assurance, data management, statistical analysis and process improvement.
