Responsibilities
The purpose of this role is:
In this role you will have strategic responsibility to ensure and enable PVP, plant patent, and trade secret related protection by building and leading a global PVP/R operational team. He/she is responsible for monitoring legislative changes of germplasm protection, registration and enforcement and adjusting internal policies and processes accordingly.
As regional lead for the Germplasm Legal Framework in EAME, you will be part of the regional ALIP leadership team. In close cooperation with the other Regional Germplasm Legal & IP Leads you will support the implementation of the germplasm legal framework, and be an ambassador for germplasm protection and registration, germplasm movement and contractual compliance.
Responsibilities:
Collectively establishing, shape and lead the global Germplasm Legal Framework (GLF). Driving implementation and harmonization of policies and processes at regional level through
Establishing and leading the EAME regional GLF team. Recruit, train and lead GLF personal, ensure adequate resourcing
Defining and implementing strategies, policies, processes, and tools (databases) relating to germplasm protection (incl. PVP, germplasm patents and trade secrets), registration (incl. variety naming) and IP FTO incl. appropriate risk management
In cooperation with the crop ALIP teams, providing leadership, strategic oversight and support to R&D and the business to enable and ensure robust and crop specific germplasm protection and risk-adjusted FTO
Creating, implementing, and owning globally the germplasm IP FTO process incl. adequate documentation of access and FTP status
Monitoring development of germplasm protection and registration legislations at international and national levels and communicating conclusion and implications for Syngenta.
Proactively adjusting processes and policies in consequence of changes
In cooperation with the crop ALIP teams, driving germplasm enforcement. Implementing and owning the support network for germplasm enforcement & litigation approval process incl. the related support processes (e.g., evidence collection and marker testing)
Contributing to GM trait post-patent strategy and holistic strategies around seeds assets. Owning germplasm related part of holistic protection strategies
Contributing to the development of training materials to build awareness of the importance of germplasm protection and FTO
Representing the Syngenta positions in international organizations and towards legislators and stakeholders.
Requirements:
Background in legal & IP or plant science/breeding with at least 10 years experience with germplasm protection and enforcement incl. technical guidelines
Strong understanding of PVP and seed registration on global and national level
Understanding of freedom-to-operate clearance for germplasm
Project management experience
Leadership and management experience
Experience working in industry associations and with external stakeholders (legislators, NOGs etc.) Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Influencing skills with demonstrated internal and external track record
