Monsanto’s wheat breeding program develops high quality wheat varieties for all major market classes in the United States. This exceptional team utilizes state-of-the-art breeding methodologies and technologies to enhance performance, quality and disease resistance. We are currently seeking a highly motivated Hard Red Spring Breeder for the Northern Plains area, functioning as part of an innovative wheat breeding team. The Breeder's primary responsibility will be to develop superior Hard Red Spring varieties for the Northern Plains emphasizing performance, agronomics and quality.

Key Business Accountabilities:

  • Conduct successful breeding program within the structure of a high-efficiency, high-throughput centralized breeding functions
  • Responsible for ensuring that pipeline advancement strategy meets targets defined by management within given resource allocation
  • Utilize latest methods & technologies to develop superior HRS varieties suited to varied markets and channels in the Northern Plains wheat growing area
  • Develop, document and advance superior lines to advanced phase testing and work with Commercial Breeder and Commercial Management team to successfully deliver new products to market
  • Possess intimate knowledge of regional wheat production and cropping systems, competitive varieties and adaptation attributes to inform product development
  • Extensive travel to target territory to visit field trials, attend field days, and represent breeding at other commercial obligations where necessary will be required
  • Work closely with local Testing Agronomist(s) to monitor crop progress and condition
  • Work with Pathology group to ensure adequate screening and selection for appropriate disease resistance traits essential to territory and accurate characterization of advanced stage material
  • Assist Commercial Breeder in developing comprehensive product profiles for internal and external customers
  • Analyze, interpret and report multi-season, multi-location data for advancement decisions
  • Work with enabling functions to forecast appropriate resource needs within budget and timelines
  • Provide Purity/IP coordinator with adequate quantities of pure seed and all relevant descriptive observations of advanced stage material
  • Work in a cross-functional team environment making contributions towards overall team goals of increased efficiency and genetic gain
  • Function as team leader, exemplifying Monsanto safety policies to ensure safety of all operations
  • Recruit, train, develop, and retain research support personnel

Core Business/Functional Skills and Education:

  • PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Crop Science or related field of study with at least 5 years of experience
  • Strong background in plant breeding, genetics, field plot techniques, statistics and molecular marker applications and proven track record in a commercial breeding program
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a small team in the successful completion of yearly goals and long-term objectives
  • Proficiency with database applications, spreadsheet software, experimental design and statistics
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and orientation to innovation and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams
  • Excellent leadership and people skills and effective verbal communication
  • Ability to write and speak in English fluently

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of modern technical approaches of germplasm improvement and crop protection
  • Experience in research of Wheat, Durum, and/or other Small Grains
