Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to work with the Monsanto Vegetable Division, a division that includes De Ruiter Seeds, Seminis Seeds and the International Seed Group. This position is responsible for reliable and timely supply of seed produced in the NAFTA region (Williams, California) with an emphasis on cage production. The incumbent will manage all aspects of safety and compliance, assigned grower contractual agreements and relationships, agronomic practices and other supporting activities for production of vegetable seed crops. This position may supervise seasonal and contract employees. The position is under direct supervision of the Cage and Production Operations Manager. The role may be expanded to include additional responsibilities to support Monsanto business
 
Key Business Accountabilities:
Reliability of Supply and Timeliness:
  • Crop Management, Harvest and Delivery – Knowledgeable of all stages of the crop cycle and the associated agronomic practices. Ensure all production data is reported accurately and in a timely manner
  • Production Data and Analysis – Work with the production team to comprehensively review quantity and quality data and addresses areas for improvement, simplification, optimization and/or expansion for the improvement of our business
  • Grower Pricing Review Process – Work with peers and area production managers to review grower pricing strategies and reduce financial exposure
  • Crop Placement – Ensure crops are placed to meet targeted contract quality, quality and timeliness requirements
  • Grower Relations and Contracts– Conduct face to face discussions and negotiations. Ensure best practices and maintains a positive and vibrant grower network. Understand the importance of grower costs and how they are effectively managed
 
Cost Management and Control:
  • Overview: Understand concept of budgets and capital expenditure activities to meet annual and long range plans. Develop an understanding of the impact of over-production, guarantees and other contract clauses on our business
  • Seasonal and Contract Labor – Ensure department procedures for approvals and manages costs to meet targets. Understand the impact of labor and cost on production
  • Grower Payments – Understand grower payment process
  • House Keeping – Ensure site is maintained in a professional manner at all times. Any seed, trash, materials and equipment must be disposed according to Monsanto policies and federal, state and local compliance requirements in a timely manner
 
Innovation and Sharing:
  • Innovation: Embrace the importance of innovation and promotes an environment of continuous improvement
  • Production Research – Work with production research personnel to identity and address project activities to improve reliability of supply
  • Implementation – Promote new techniques or procedures among growers and gains their acceptance. Work with internal and external stakeholders to understand new innovations, techniques and methods
  • Sharing Best Practices – Ensure an environment of open communication among production areas and willingly shares production information within and across our regions
 
Core Business/Functional Skills and Education:
  • B.S. degree with 3 or more year’s seed industry experience with a combination of manufacturing, operational and/or production experience
  • Demonstrated supervisory abilities are desirable
  • Experience in vegetable seed production and/or protected culture is desirable
  • Ability to interact cross-functionally with various internal departments and external agencies to ensure Monsanto ESH and compliance requirements are met
  • Ability to write ISO documentation, obtain stakeholder approval of documents and conduct necessary training
  • Excellent communications skills required including the capability to clearly present information and influence or persuade others through oral or written communications
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced global and multi-cultural vegetable seed company
  • Demonstrated research and problem solving skills
  • Ability to think strategically, evaluate current processes/procedures and recommend revisions as necessary to senior management.
  • PC proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Access, Power Point) and demonstrated skills in SAP, FIDO or other like software programs
