Vegetable Breeding Technology Intern

Location: Woodland, California, USA

Reference: #01CLS

Vegetable breeding technology interns get hands-on experience in agricultural genetics and its application to improve the practice of plant breeding and agriculture. As an intern in this organization, you can also gain exposure to other related functions such as marker development, next-generation sequencing and other bioinformatics techniques, plant breeding, seed production, and high-throughput laboratories.

Interns are assigned to supervisors who outline general responsibilities, assist in project assignment and completion, and arrange opportunities to visit other functions. You will interact daily with many different producers and consumers of molecular and pathology data, which will provide a broad overview of the career opportunities available at Monsanto.

You can expect to spend significant time with supervisors, during which rationale and philosophy behind the implementation of tools from genomic sciences to applied problems in a plant breeding program can be explored.

You will be asked to perform a specific research assignment. The results of this project will be presented to an audience of other interns and interested crop teams. In addition, as part of your assignment, you will be asked for feedback on the program and research project throughout the internship experience.

The tentative dates for this internship are May 14 - August 3 of 2018.

Required:

  • Current enrollment in a B.S. or M.S. program with interest in exploring a career in agriculture, with emphasis on Plant Sciences, and/or Plant Pathology
  • Detail and results-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and effectively
  • Strong motivational, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Must be returning to school upon completion of internship.

Preferred:

  • Basic competency with command-line computing and a scripting language such as Perl, Python, or R is a plus
