On Tuesday, 20 January, the CTPS Beets and Industrial Chicory Section met for its traditional early-year meeting. This was an opportunity to welcome its new chairperson: Juliette AURICOSTE, Inspector at the CGAAER.
After reviewing the 2025 campaign, in which record yields were recorded for all species despite uneven emergence and development due to a dry spring, the Section returned to examining the varieties studied at the CTPS in 2025. After discussion, 45 varieties of sugar beet, 2 varieties of fodder beet and 3 varieties of industrial chicory will be proposed for inclusion in List A of the French Catalogue.
For the 2026 trial, the yellowing system will evolve. The trials will now be co-inoculated with the three main yellows viruses (BMYV, BChV and BYV) in four replicates. As in 2025, while all candidates in their first year of study will be included in the programme, only certain candidates in their second year of study will be evaluated for yellows, in consultation with breeders.
This reorganisation will consolidate the VSCU network for sugar beet, with the introduction of new trials.
The special experiment on Low Wealth Syndrome (LWS) will be renewed in 2026 with the implementation of a trial in Alsace.
In fodder beet, work will be carried out in 2026 to consolidate the experimental network, particularly with regard to brown rhizoctonia.
The Section also reviewed the 2025 certification campaign. Regulatory news, particularly regarding NGT and PRM texts, was shared. Finally, feedback on the latest working sessions of the CTPS Plenary Committee and Scientific Committee was presented to the Section.
