MYCOGEN® brand SILAGE-SPECIFIC™ corn hybrids produced two grand champion entries at the World’s Forage Analysis Superbowl en route to a highly successful overall showing. Winners were announced at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., Wednesday, Sept. 30.
“We are very excited about the outstanding results our customers achieved in the 2009 World’s Forage Analysis Superbowl,” says Greg Cannon, forage products marketing specialist, Mycogen Seeds.
Southtown Dairy Farm of South New Berlin, N.Y., was named the World’s Forage Grand Champion with corn silage made from Mycogen BMR hybrid F2F449. Southtown Dairy Farm is southwest of Albany, N.Y., and milks 650 cows three times a day. In addition, Steiner Farms of Sterling, Ohio, was named the grand champion in the BMR Corn Silage category with its F2F700 entry.
Other BMR placings
MYCOGEN brand BMR hybrids swept the competition in the Brown Mid-Rib (BMR) Dairy Corn Silage rankings, taking all nine placings. In addition to the grand champion in this category, other BMR hybrid winners included Holmes Acres Farm, New Woodstock, N.Y.; Wilwerding Dairy, Freeport, Minn.; Mulligan Dairy, Avon, N.Y.; Jon Merrell, Wolcott, N.Y.; Morrisville State College, Morrisville, N.Y.; Schreiberdale Holsteins, Perry, N.Y.; and Ken Deezeuw, McBain, Mich.
“Our line of MYCOGEN brand SILAGE-SPECIFIC corn hybrids are bred for nutritional quality and offer the most digestible nutrients for optimal animal performance,” Cannon explains. “The diverse lineup allows growers to select the proper hybrid for their geography and management practices.”
Dairy corn silage winners
MYCOGEN brand hybrids also performed very well in the Standard Dairy Corn Silage (non-BMR) category, earning three awards. Award-winning entries in this division are: Gernaat Dairy LLC of Falmouth, Mich., with TMF2N494; Maple Downs Farms 2 of Middleburgh, N.Y., with TMF94; and Merlin Bliefernicht of DeForest, Wis., with TMF2Q716.
All corn silage winners were selected based on forage analysis, visual analysis and milk per ton.
Alfalfa winners
Several MYCOGEN alfalfa customers also placed well in both the Dairy Hay and Dairy Haylage divisions at the World’s Forage Analysis Superbowl.
Andy Bruggemen, St. Henry, Ohio; Meggie Walz, Glen Haven, Wis.; and Tim Walz, Glen Haven, Wis., all placed in the Dairy Hay division. Sand Creek Dairy LLC, Hastings, Mich.; Andy Thelen, St. Johns, Mich.; Tim Smith, Pulaski, Wis.; Packard Farms, Clare, Mich.; Wayne Mathison, Cumberland, Wis.; and Steve Benthem, McBain, Mich., were finalists in the Dairy Haylage class.
“We offer top-performing alfalfas that provide superb yield potential, high-quality forage, and disease and pest resistance,” Cannon explains.
