Barley Australia announces the results of 2012 malting barley evaluation trials

Australia
March 6, 2013

It is with great pleasure that the Board of Barley Australia announces the successful accreditation of four new malting barley varieties

  • Grange
  • Henley
  • Scope
  • Westminster

These varieties were accredited following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee assessment under the two-stage malting barley evaluation process.

Barley Australia congratulates the various breeders and institutions that have worked to bring these varieties to the marketplace and their uptake and response will be watched with interest.

The Barley Australia website www.barleyaustralia.com.au includes a list of both Preferred varieties as well as Approved or accredited varieties. (The website will be updated in the immediate future to reflect these new varieties).

"This Preferred list is the message to Australian growers of the varieties that are sought by the market. If a grower is growing something not on our list, it's unlikely it is going to end up getting used by the malting and brewing industry, unless it is for a specific small market segment somewhere," said Andrew Gee, Executive Chairman of Barley Australia.
