Vegetable roadshow to break new ground in Western Australia

Australia
March 26, 2014

Western Australian vegetable growers will have their say on a range of horticultural issues at a series of free levy payers’ meetings, to be held this week as part of a nationwide Regional Roadshow by AUSVEG and Horticulture Australia Limited.

The first meeting will take place in Joondalup on Thursday, 27 March at the Joondalup Resort. Carnarvon will host the second meeting, which will be held on Friday, 28 March at the Gascoyne Research Station. This marks the first time that such a roadshow has visited Carnarvon, and will forge new horticultural dialogue in the region.

“These meetings give levy payers an update on the state of the industry, while also encouraging growers to provide feedback on the direction of future investments in Research and Development,” said AUSVEG National Manager of Export Development, Hayden Moore.

AUSVEG is the leading horticultural body representing Australia’s 9,000 vegetable and potato growers.

Guest speakers in Joondalup will include Garth Calender from Control Risks, outlining the recently developed Crisis Management Plan for the vegetable industry, as well as Gordon Hay from TradeStart who will discuss trade opportunities for WA growers. Also speaking at the roadshow will be Rohan Prince from the Western Australia Department of Agriculture and Food, detailing recently completed and upcoming projects.

Speakers at the Carnarvon meeting will include Bevan Addison from FarmOz discussing new chemical registration, and Brenda Coutts from the Western Australia Department of Agriculture and Food. Mr Moore will also detail the recently developed Export Readiness Project for vegetable growers, and discuss opportunities available through horticultural exports.

“The Export Readiness Project is an exciting tool that has been developed by AUSVEG with the aim to assist growers in expanding their businesses. Horticultural exports have the opportunity to open up expansive new markets for vegetable growers, particularly in WA given its proximity to Asia, the Middle East and India,” said Mr Moore.

Representatives from AUSVEG and HAL will also provide industry updates at both meetings.
