Canadian growers take note: canola claim deadlines - Seed companies and crop insurance providers have programs for unseeded and flooded crop

Canada
June 20, 2010

Growers who signed contracts when they purchased canola seed for the 2010 growing season may qualify for compensation. Seed companies and crop insurance programs will compensate growers for acres taken out of production or acres reseeded.

Deadlines to make a claim are very soon and vary by company. The Canola Council of Canada (CCC) encourages growers who are in a claim position to contact their seed retailer or the seed company’s claim call centre immediately.

The CCC also reminds growers to file their seeded acres report to crop insurance before the deadline. Timely filing will make sure growers qualify for unseeded acres coverage where available.

Finally, before turning under any seeded crop that was destroyed by excess rain, growers should contact crop insurance to discuss options.

"We realize the situation many canola growers are in with regard to unseeded and flooded acres," says Denise Maurice, CCC vice president of crop production. "So it’s important that growers make the best of a bad situation and use these programs available to them."
