Interview with Dr. Isaac Nir

Which organization certify your operations as organic? Tell us also about the ongoing official certification process that monitors your operations from research to packaging and shipping.

Genesis Seeds is certified by three major agencies:

  1. PPIS - A public agency, the Israeli Plant Protection Inspection Service: This organization is working according to the European Community standards and recently applied for approval by the USDA as well. This is a very strict and reliable organization, respected around the world. The PPIS supervisors are inspecting the production and processing facilities regularly and keep very close track of our stock availability.
  2. Agrior / IFOAM, - A private agency. The worldwide umbrella organization of the organic agriculture movement in 107 countries, it has issued most production standards for the organic industry. Agrior is the Israeli agency and has been approved by IFOAM to supervise growers and industrial facilities. Agrior is also among other private and public agencies that have submitted an application for USDA approval.
  3. Demeter, a private biodynamic organization with headquarters in Germany. It supervises and approves our research and production in Kibbutz Harduf.

The official certification process that monitors our operations follows the following steps:

  • Close follow up of every seed lot, from planting to harvesting,  processing and storage. The crop report for each lot is stored in the computer of the official certifying agencies, who follow up and update the data after every shipment.
  • The certified organic seeds are stored in organic controlled storage facilities, seed bags are sealed with organic seal and marked with all the specific information of the variety: name, botanical name, date of storage, germination, purity, and lot number. Each shelf bears a sign with with the name of the species, The door to the storage room is locked and outside there is a big sign saying "Organic Seeds".
  • All the organic seeds are delivered by the growers to our seed processing center in organic bags or organic containers sealed with the organic seal and tags (prepared in advance by our office) inside and outside the bags with specific information about the production lot.
  • On all the cartons and bags is clearly printed "Certified Organic Seeds". Inside and outside the seed bags there are identification tags that specify all the information about the seeds.
  • On the invoice we specify the lot number that enables us to follow up any seeds from the grower to the customer and back.
  • Organic certificates are issued by PPIS organization or the IFOAM officials (Agrior), in addition to the international health certificate.

Our research stations are supervised and get the official certification like any other organic grower. If the officials of the certifying agencies have any doubt as to how certain crops have been handled, they send test samples of plants and soil to their laboratory for chemical evaluation.
