TRIATHLON BROCCOLI
IS A WINNER!
Uniform with a dense, smooth domed-shaped head, Triathlon is a must!

by Jim Vaux
Cool Crops Manager

Triathlon broccoli has gained
a lot of attention over the past year. This outstanding hybrid has performed well in the over-wintering slot in the desert Southwest when harvested in the mid-February-March slot.

It is very uniform
and produces
a dense, smooth, domed-shape head with medium-small beads. Because of
its short branching, uniformity and heavy head weight, Triathlon makes a high quality crown cut product for both the domestic and export markets. Triathlon purples less than other varieties in the over-wintering slot and has also demonstrated good field tolerance to downy mildew.

Yields of high quality heads are essential to the bottom-line of any broccoli operation and this is where Triathlon shines. Growers in all production areas are urged to test Triathlon under their own growing conditions to determine where it performs best for them.

Triathlon works well in the Oxnard area of California for the freezer market in the March-April harvest period. Some growers are reporting 12,000 - 14,000 lbs. paid weight per acre.

Performance of Triathlon in Maine has also been extremely promising. Heads in trials have been very large, dense, smooth and uniform making it an attractive product for the bunching market. Triathlon also demonstrates excellent field holding capabilities.

Several other trials are being conducted in key production locations to identify additional opportunities for the use of Triathlon. As more information is collected and reviewed, we will make further recommendations for its use. If you are interested in trying Triathlon, please contact your Sakata representative.
