Initially,
Genesis Seeds was established to contribute to stimulating
economic
growth in Israel while providing the international seed industry with
superior quality
high value seeds. For the first few years we directed our
efforts toward
flower seeds. In those days, there was no flower seed industry in Israel.
In 1998 we shifted our focus toward the emerging organic
market. The organic
movement in Europe was gathering strength with the "Greens." It was
part of a political agenda. In America the organic
movement was also
becoming more active. The backlash against GMOs was raging in Europe and becoming evident in the
United States.
At that time,
Israel had over 5,000 hectares of certified organic land and
several hundred
well educated farmers who had organic growing experience. The
country has many mico-climates, including several frost free area suitable for year round production. This also allows for
year-round testing and research to develop new varieties
and quality standards.
All this provided excellent conditions for
Genesis Seeds to
enter the organic seed business.
In addition, laws in Europe and the US were in the works that
would require the use of organic seeds for organic production.
