Your background is in horticulture. What important lessons you
have learned during your many years in this sector?
I am constantly
amazed by the changes that have taken place during the
more than 45 years I have spent in the horticultural sector.
New techniques and practices have emerged. They have been
tested and applied to create what we know as modern
agriculture.
Organic
farming, however, is not new. It has been practiced for
hundreds of years. It is now re-emerging as an essential
part of agriculture.
Looking back at
my career in agriculture, I would like to share with you some
observations that have been helpful in achieving success:
- High energy
and persistence. You must have both.
- A good
memory. Very important.
- Listen
carefully to your customers. A key attribute.
- Get to closure.
Too many people leave before getting to closure.
- Never give
up too early. Many times, staying the course a little longer
brings success.
- Seek a
win-win situation. You cannot be successful with a 90-10
deal.
- Be fair and
do the right thing.
- Maintain a
good sense of humor.
Finally, we, as
stewards of the land, have an ethical and moral responsibility
to preserve and protect all our natural resources. Being
involved in organic
agriculture is one way to protect these vital resources,
At this stage of my life, I am grateful to be able to make a
small contribution toward this goal. |
