Interview with Manny Shemin

How do you assess the current demand for organic seed and its evolution over the next five years?

In the US, total sales of organic products, including seed, is about 10 billion dollars for 2002. The number is about the same for Europe.

Worldwide, total sales for this year are forecast to reach about 25 billion dollars. Although this is not a very large amount of business, the growth rate in this sector is a remarkable 20 to 30% per year.

As the law in Europe kicks in early 2004, we can expect an even stronger growth.

The expanded use of organic products will happen as lower prices, better quality, higher yields and increased distribution are realized. This will result in a huge critical mass that will enable millions of people from all economic classes to afford the purchase of organic products. In the long run, eating organic food will not just be for the upper class. I am very sure of this.
