United Kingdom
June 17, 2025
We have recently announced changes to our Seeds R&D operations in the UK, specifically regarding our hybrid barley and hybrid wheat breeding programmes.
To enhance our research capabilities and strengthen our product pipeline, we are consolidating our early-stage R&D for cereal hybrid breeding programmes into mainland Europe. Whilst this consolidation includes the closure of our R&D Whittlesford site, our commitment to the UK market remains. Syngenta will continue to test, screen, and commercialise hybrid cereals focused on the UK market, and is committed to bringing the best performing cereal seed varieties to UK growers.
We remain on track for our commercial hybrid wheat launch in 2027, with extensive UK-based trials continuing to ensure products are suited to local conditions. Our customers will continue to be supported by our commercial teams and local technical expertise, maintaining our high standard of customer service. Whilst Syngenta will now place a focus on developing hybrid varieties, we note that the wider market will continue to provide choice, and growers will assess and choose between hybrid and conventional seed based on agronomic needs.
This strategic refinement of our European Cereals breeding programmes aligns with our successful model utilised in other product areas, where centralised innovation coupled with extensive country-based trials has proven highly effective. By consolidating our resources and focusing our innovation efforts, we are strengthening our ability to deliver cutting-edge solutions that support sustainable and profitable farming.
Syngenta looks forward to continuing to serve UK growers through the seeds, crop protection and wider innovation we bring to the market.
