Dr Jolon Dyer has been appointed interim Group Chief Executive for Plant & Food Research to support the transition of the organisation into an amalgamated Crown Research Institute.

On 1 July 2025, Plant & Food Research will merge with AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research and Scion to form the Bioeconomy Science Institute. The four Group CEOs will work alongside Transition CEO, Mark Piper to provide leadership and guidance as the four organisations integrate to form the new organisation.
Dr Dyer is currently Director of Science for Plant & Food Research, a role that sees him lead over 600 science staff. Prior to joining in 2021 as Group GM Science Services, Dr Dyer was at AgResearch for 17 years, including 10 years in Science Group Leader roles and Associate Research Director roles. He is also an accomplished scientist, holding Adjunct Professor roles at the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University, and has significant national and international recognition for his science achievements, specialising in the development of redox proteomics approaches to understanding and controlling protein modification and damage.
The Bioeconomy Science Institute will conduct research to advance innovation in agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, forestry, biotechnology and manufacturing; protect and enhance ecosystems from biosecurity threats and climate risks; and develop new bio-based technologies and products. The combined Institute will bring together more than 2,000 people, including more than 1,500 scientists and researchers.
